5th International Conference for Interaction Design and Children (IDC)
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

In today's schools, homes, and public spaces, children are becoming
frequent and experienced users of technology. As this trend continues, it
is increasingly important to understand both the needs of children and the
nature of technological design for young people. With this in mind, the
IDC conference focuses on addressing the challenges of interaction design
for children. We also explore the opportunities that new technologies
afford - and the impact that those technologies have - in the everyday
lives of young people.

To address emerging research and development, IDC 2006 will look for long
papers, short papers, demonstrations, and posters in the following broad
areas:
- Emerging technologies for children (e.g., innovative educational
simulations, online games, mobile communications devices, wireless
embedded technologies, sensors and actuators, "smart" materials,
authoring/programming tools, storytelling technologies)
- The impact these technologies can have on children's lives (e.g., in
schools, at home, in public spaces)
- New research methods which give children a voice in the design,
development, and evaluation processes (e.g., participatory design methods,
usability testing)

TOPICS
IDC 2006 welcomes submissions on all topics from the domain of interaction
design and children, including, but not limited to:
- Emerging or new technologies and their impact on children's education or
play
- Methods and techniques for establishing children's requirements for
interactive systems
- Guidelines for the design of interactive systems for children
- Reports on the development of interactive systems for children
(motivation, design, outcome, evaluation)
- Usability, enjoyability, accessibility, ethics, and safety issues, with
particular reference to children
- Design of innovative systems for children
- Evaluation methods for use with children
- Evaluations of interactive systems and technologies for children
- Theoretical models of interaction with special relevance to children
- Results of ethnographic and case studies in children's use of
interactive systems
- Stimulating in-depth analyses of issues related to interaction design
and children
- Effects of interactive technologies in children's lives (e.g. game
violence and aggression, obesity, learning)
- Design and evaluation of interactive systems for children with special
needs

LONG PAPERS
The IDC 2006 conference will continue to present significant contributions
to research, development, and practice in the field of interaction design
and children. All accepted papers are presented at the IDC 2006
conference, and appear in the IDC 2006 Proceedings.
We particularly invite designers, academics and practitioners to submit
papers in the following categories:
- Experiments
- Case studies
- Reviews
- Design innovations
- Bringing theory into practice or practice into theory
- Reflections

Full papers must report original work that has not been previously
published. The contribution should be made clear in the paper and in its
abstract. Papers making one clear, significant contribution are more
likely to be accepted than papers making several lesser contributions. The
paper must identify and cite published work relevant to the paper topic.
It should explain how the presented work has built on previous
contributions, and should indicate where and why novel approaches have
been adopted. Papers should stress their contribution to concepts and
theories in the field of interaction design and children. Papers
addressing novel techniques and technologies should clearly identify the
relevance and importance to IDC.

Submissions must be complete. Papers may be up to 8 pages formatted
according to the ACM SIGCHI Publications Format. Submission should be made
electronically in PDF format through the conference paper submission and
reviewing system. See http://www.cs.uta.fi/idc2006 for publication format
templates and submission details.

SHORT PAPERS, POSTERS AND DEMOS
Short papers and posters may address any of the areas identified in the
conference topics. Submissions should report original work that has not
been published previously. Authors are encouraged to demonstrate work in
progress and late-breaking research results that show the latest
innovative ideas. We invite presentation of ongoing work and preliminary
results, by experienced academics as well as young researchers.
