I tried to fix this, but I can't seem to convince ElementButton not to paint 
its background color.  Even if I comment out all of paintEvent(), you still 
get the colored squares.  I also tried setFrameStyle( QFrame::NoFrame ) and 
setBackgroundMode( QWidget::NoBackground ) in the ctor...
