Correct: Higher compression level -> smaller size, but slower (de)compression.
We follow the default compression level for the various archive formats. For bzip2 the max level is the default, while for others it is somewhere in the middle. There is a trade-off, since for some formats using the max level increases the (de)compression time alot with little reduction in size.
For most formats the minimum compression level is equivalent to just storing the files, i.e. no compression.

For zip and 7z multi-vol archives have the suffix .zip.001, zip.002, etc and .7z.001, 7z.002, etc.
For rar the volumes get the name .part1.rar, part2.rar, etc.
.r00, .r01 is the old rar naming scheme, but is no longer used by rar by default (it can be specified with switch, however). We use the new naming scheme for rars.
The volume size can be chosen for various reasons. Previously, it was used for splitting large files onto several floppy disks. Nowadays, it is probably most used for attaching large files to emails (usually there is a limit of 5MB).
We set a min limit for volume size of 100 KB and a max limit of 1000 MB in the GUI in Ark.
