I would suggest looking for help on an Ubuntu mailing list or forum.  I don't
know how KHelpCenter crashed if you were trying to change a resolution setting
for the display.  However, one thing to try is making sure /etc/X11/xorg.conf
either does not exist or is set up correctly for your hardware.  Also one
additional question - are you saying that X starts correctly but setting the
resolution is a problem because that window is too large for your displayed
screen?  If so, do any other programs work OK or are all of them too large?
