Summary: HIG should specify space/shift+space for scrolling
                    uneditable documents
           Product: docs
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: unspecified
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: kde-doc-english at kde.org
        ReportedBy: bulbul at fizzylogic.com

Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1)
Installed from: Unspecified

In some document viewing programs, space is used to scroll down one
"screenful" and shift+space is used to move up one screenful. It is a
further convention, in documents with pagination (e.g. PDF and PostScript),
that if the viewer is already at the top of the page and you press
shift+space then it goes to the bottom of the preceding page. Conversely,
if the viewer is at the bottom of the page, pressing shift will take you to
the top of the next page.

Programs that i know of which used this convention are: Mozilla, Konqueror,
KDVI, xdvi, and GhostView. (The upcoming version of kdvi will implement the shift+space convention in response to bug 58826.)

It would be nice to see these conventions enshrined in the HIG. This is particularly important because it is not clear if the upcoming version of KGhostView will continue to adhere to this convention (see bug 17400), breaking uniformity with KDVI and Konqueror.

I have also filed a Gnome HIG bug here:
