Hi Lucy,
thanks for your feedback!
The change to make double click the default after 25 years of single
click was definitely a controversial one, even within the Plasma
development team.
Please check out the GitLab issue on this subject that should provide
more insights on the reasoning:
https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-desktop/-/issues/72
Rest assured that most of the Plasma core developers, myself included,
are strong opponents of double click! However, many of our top tier
distributions, such as Kubuntu, and even the Steam Deck, have already
been shipping Plasma with double click as a default for some time.
Therefore, what *we* define as a default isn’t necessarily what the end
user sees.
Therefore, we had to admit that realistically it’s what a lot of our
users are already using and it matches what pretty much any other
desktop environment does.
Personally, I will always switch back to single click, including on
friends and family’s computers that I maintain. However, with the young
generation growing up with touch screens, who knows, maybe single click
(or tap) will be the norm again at some point ;) Changing it back now
will just be yet another disruption. Let’s re-evaluate that soonest for
Plasma 7, shall we?
Cheers
Kai Uwe
