kdesrc build. num-cores doesnt work

on this machine i tried the kdesrc for the first time and a rc file got created in my homedir.
the num cores is correctly detected (64), but when building i ran ps and it actually gives j 4.
altering the rc to explicitly set make-options to have "-j 64" solved it.
