Hi,

I'm sorry if I'm repeating questions that have been asked previously. I'm
exploring using cygwin + Xfree86 as a replacement for a Unix machine. KDE
seemed the most attractive window manager so I went ahead and installed
it. I had it working successfully on my laptop, but now that I've tried to
install it on my desktop and run into problems, I find I'm running into
problems on my laptop as well. The strange thing is that I haven't changed
anything pertaining to cygwin since I had it working...

I'm not sure how to go about figuring what's wrong. When I run startx I
get the following messages:
[: ==: unknown operand
kdeinit: launch -> dcopserver --nosid
kdeinit: Launched DCOPServer, pid = 2488 result = 0
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket
_KDE_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
iceauth: creating new authority file /home/nitin/.ICEauthority
DCOP: register 'anonymous-948' -> number of clients is now 1
DCOP: unregister 'anonymous-948'
DCOP: register 'anonymous-2488' -> number of clients is now 1
DCOPServer up and running.
kdeinit: launch -> klauncher (null)
DCOP: unregister 'anonymous-2488'
DCOP: register 'ksplash' -> number of clients is now 1
kdeinit: Launched KLauncher, pid = 404 result = 0
DCOP: register 'klauncher' -> number of clients is now 2
DCOP: unregister 'klauncher'
DCOP: register 'klauncher' -> number of clients is now 2
kdecore (KSocket): Trying to listen on Unix /tmp/ksocket-Nitin
Kasturi/klauncher
8bxrMb.slave-socket
kdecore (KSocket): Socket bound: 7
DCOP: new daemon klauncher
DCOP: register 'anonymous-404' -> number of clients is now 2
DCOP: unregister 'ksplash'

KDE seems to die on the second item, Initializing system services" with the
splash screen disappearing, giving me a dead Xwindow. Cygwin becomes very
difficult to close after this -- I have to kill a bunch of kdeinit
processes in the Task Manager.b

The error in bold seems consistent with the note on the FAQ
(http://kde-cygwin.sourceforge.net/faq/kde2.php), however there is no
"cygdrive flags" variable at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygnus
Solutions. I did find a cygdrive flags" variable at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin\mounts v2 and I changed
that to "0x0a" but that didn't seem to do anything.

This appears to have been a problem for many people, so I imagine someone
could readily help me. I'm running Windows XP (My desktop is actually
running Win2K.).

My limited experiences with KDE2 so far: It seems a bit slow to load
up. I love the feel of it, though. I haven't tried any other window
managers, but are there any out there that load faster and are less buggy
-- I'm willing to experiment with KDE, but others who want to go the same
route aren't so willing.

Please reply to me directly as I'm not on the list.... If there's anything
I should output, please let me know...

Thanks for your help!

Nitin
