gcc can't generate executables?

I'm trying to build mutt 2.5.4 from sources, but the configure script is
giving me the error:

> checking for gcc... gcc
> checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
> configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler
> cannot create executables.

Any clues about this?

Speaking of mutt, any recommendations for good terminal programs to run
this in? The Windows (XP) command window seems to lack some features like
the character to show thread tree arrows, or bolding.

Thanks,
