kitemmodels: patch looking for review

Hi,

I wrote a patch [1] for kitemmodels around a week ago, which is
intended to address the issue on MSYS2 [2]. I'm not 100% sure if I did
it correctly so hope someone could help review this patch. I hope this
mailing list is the correct place to ask for review, if not, please
let me know so I can go to the correct place.
