It's hard to add something new after the lengthy discussion, but still :)

I like your approach. It's simple and practical, especially the toggle  
button for inhibition. That does cover the single usecase for profile  
selector.
Personally I'd go further and forget about activity-dependent power  
management (too complicated to my taste), but your choice is fine too.
