if the total time taken is small, nothing is shown. often, though, the initial 
connect (and auth, if any) time exceeds that timeout and a notification is 
shown, even though the actual data transfer time is small. personally, i think 
that's not a bad thing: it shows that somthing is indeed happening when it 
takes a while to contact the server. visual feedback, particularly since it is 
passive in this case, is good.

regardless, this is a different issue to the one addressed in my patch :)
