Neither do I. For example, Strigi only works if CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH is set (and 
that's an environment variable, not a cmake -DCMAKE_XXXX variable), *despite* 
the pkg-config files being properly installed and found.

I'm not saying we should use pkg-config (the tool), but how about putting all 
the information in the .pc files? And parsing them for the information 
required, instead of trying to guess?
