yes, but in this case it's set in the ctor and we do know the ordering even if
it's not supposed to be relied on. it is, as i said, an immediate solution
while we put in something better.
i'm probably going to work on it today, but i wasn't sure about that last week
and i didn't want it to hold you up in the meantime.
