in that case it would fall back to a "normal" KSystemTrayIcon, which is based 
on the cross-platform QSystemTrayIcon. well, only when there is no D-Bus 
NotificationItem host available; if you run the Plasma desktop shell on 
Windows you'll get the new icon system as well. 

this is also the same mechanism that keeps them working in, say, KDE3 or 
GNOME.
