It's not as popular as American cultural references to be sure.

But then again it's probably the most popular pure-British comedy import.  
(The Office and Whose Line is it Anyways? are/were popular, in their 
Americanized variants).

Especially many American geeks are able to quote Monty Python and the Holy 
Grail almost by heart (a fact referenced in "Weird Al" Yankovic's "White & 
Nerdy" song).
