Very confusing indeed. IMHO there should be an option to switch between base 1000 and base 1024 units, for which clear conventions exist.
So here at http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/943/diff/
is the implementation of tests against the current behaviour of formatByteSize() and an initial implementation of formatByteSizeCustom. The patch attached to this mail adds an option to select between SI/IEC system but it doesn't yet save the value (can someone see why not?)..
