something that came up during a private conversation was defining the role of 
this part of it a bit more clearly:

this service only keeps track of the dbus services registered with it such 
that visualizations can find items to show, and apps can register items.

the actual data describing each item is communicated directly between the 
visualization and the item so as to cut down on the number of times data needs 
to be copied around and stored.
