We're seriously considering kpackagekit as the default updater tool for kde
in Fedora 10.

And, fwiw from my own limited bit of testing, I agree with your assessments
on what's needed to make it more awesome.  We'll continue to feed further
feedback to (q|k)packagekit dev's.
