I have the problem on two computers, one 32-bit, one 64-bit, NV32 (FX
5200) on both, this one also has an NV44 and three screens. No kwin
composite on either.

I'm going to have to agree, it's REALLY ugly for me. Same story, I get
the top bit ok but the rest is black or garbage (usually some of each).
At least turn it off if kwin isn't using composite (or apply the patch;
I disagree with Lubos, IMO slow is better than broken).
