I really like the overlay solution. Those could be enable only if you hover 
over the image, so you can actually get to see what's behind it. I'd also like 
this in gwenview-the-standalone-app ...

#1 sounds sensible as a quickfix for this bug.

Thanks for looking into it, and for coming up with yet another cool gwenview 
feature.
