As far as I understand FUSE is an optional method of accessing the data,
basically a by product of the stateful "mounting" idea.
Applications using the GIO client library directly "talk" to
the "mount"-daemon which implements the protocol, but the mount daemon can
also really mount it as a FUSE filesystem, thus allowing even traditional
commandline applications to access the data.
