I just tried kdm from revision 755919 and it still fails.
The interesting part from /var/log/kdm.log seems to be the following:

Jan 2 16:22:45 kdm: :0[3423] debug: sending int 1 (0x1) to greeter for display :0
Link points to "/var/tmp/kdecache-root"
Jan 2 16:22:45 kdm: :0[3423] debug: receiving command from greeter for display :0 ...
Jan 2 16:22:45 kdm_greet[3425] debug: Receiving int from core ...
Jan  2 16:22:45 kdm_greet[3425] debug:  -> 1 (0x1)
Jan 2 16:22:45 kdm_greet[3425] error: Cannot open default user face
QImage::scaled: Image is a null image
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
  Major opcode of failed request: 53 (X_CreatePixmap)
  Value in failed request:  0x0
  Serial number of failed request: 152
  Current serial number in output stream: 164
Jan  2 16:22:45 kdm: :0[3423] debug:  -> no data
Jan 2 16:22:45 kdm: :0[3423] debug: lost connection to greeter
Jan 2 16:22:45 kdm: :0[3423] error: Abnormal termination of greeter for display :0, code 1, signal 0
Jan 2 16:22:45 kdm: :0[3423] debug: closed greeter for display :0
Jan 2 16:22:45 kdm: :0[3423] debug: greeter for :0 stopped
Jan  2 16:22:45 kdm: :0[3423] debug: display :0 exiting with status 32

So it doesn't seem to kill X, but terminate itself for whatever reason.
I can reproduce this with the Debian moreblue greeter and the default kdm greeter.

Greetings,
Armin
