That looks pretty neat :) For speed, it seems that it doesn't matter for the first click, but would get annoying if trying to see a lot of previews. With this in mind, what about: Do your nice relatively-slow smooth fade in for the first item that you preview. Then do a much more rapid transition for all the items after that. John
