if the order appears alphabetical then that's pure coincidence

you? do you mean that phonon falls back in the device preference list until it 
finds a device where libxine says that it works? That's what it does, yes.

If that is a problem for you (or anybody else) let me know a way of 
identifying that problematic pulse setup so that I can blacklist it.
