Months ago, I also hit this problem, and there's a fd.o bug report about it:

I still believe that those are important... left/right in ordered lists (or 
the appropriate rtl-agnostic terms for those) are not the same thing as 
back/forward in item history, and can't sufficiently be represented by 
media-player style icons.

But yeah, I stated all of this a long time ago already.
Perhaps this is a good occasion to revive the bug report?
