Thats not always possible, distro's ship gamin as replacement for famd
(not sure which one is installed by default) and you can't shut off
gamin except if you delete the gam_server binary from lib/gamin/ (or
rename it). And gamin in general works better than fam, so its often
preferred by users.

I think inotify should be preferred over fam/gamin, however I do
understand your point. Maybe a configuration option to change this
preference would be good?
