Sure? Yes.
In all optimisation levels? At least -O0 does.
For variables of which typess? All those that can be statically
initialisable (no constructors).
Which versions? I don't know.
I noticed that it initialised to BSS when I was testing Matthias's latest
code: both the atomic pointer and the bool were placed on the .bss, even
initialised.
