thank you, both. this is the kind of supporting information that is needed to 
make informed decisions. much better than just "why not just use avahi?", 
especially since it lets us make informed decisions =)

it seems that there are some minor downsides with avahi, but that it is a 
better option overall.

now to find someone with the interest in zeroconf to get it rocking a bit more 
in kde4 =)
