I am using an unpatched KDE on a Mandriva system and those options show up 
just fine in kfile.

Yes, my first login on my computer was using a Mandriva-provided KDE. 
That's probably how the directories on $HOME were created and how kfile 
got the configuration in the first place. But now that the config is 
there, the unpatched KDE works just fine.

(whereas Gimp [their build] doesn't at all)
