Using KIcon for icons with overlay

Hi

Since KDE3 kopete has its own code to draw overlays on icons. I'm trying to 
replace this to use KIcon instead. 
The only problem is that Kopete has a feature in which you can set a custom 
color for an specific accout, and all icons for data from that account are 
colorized.

Is there a way to apply a custom effect to an icon (in this case applying a 
color) before it gets the overlays drawn?
If not, would it be possible to change KIcon to support this before 4.0?
