the action icons are this way for a very specific reason and purpose, namely 
that the action icons in the toolbars and menus should not be distracting 
from primary content and are apt to lead to visual contention in and of 
themselves. shape and clarity is more important in this case.

app icons should be encouraged to be colourful and vibrant, though.
