KDE3 apps running in a KDE4-modified environment

+1, a plan worth exploring (at least until a better one manifests...)
I'm already trying out kde4 packaging patched to use KDE4HOME (defaults
to ~/.kde4), and KDE4DIRS.  No doubt others have similar approaches...
