that's pretty obvious. what a coincidence that make/the linker does just
the right thing. ;)

fwiw, one disadvantage should be noted: the "installed" files have the
on-disk layout created by the linker, which tends to be slightly
fragmented from what i heard. file systems with delayed allocation
(e.g., xfs) should be advantageous in this situation.
