KDEDIR still used ?

I _really_ wonder where you got that from. It's the wrong way round.
KDEDIRS *is* how kde (3 and 4) knows which installation prefixes to look into.
kstandarddirs.cpp:    QString kdedirs = readEnvPath("KDEDIRS");
