Recently someone pointed to me the XSettings spec
http://standards.freedesktop.org/xsettings-spec/xsettings-spec-0.5.html
as a possible solution to save the icon theme name. We already have
XDG_DATA_DIRS and the icon theme spec, but third-party applications have
no way of knowing which theme is being used by the desktop.
