Ok, I knew this would raise a lot of questions when I posted.

Forget what I said about accepting patches. This is an issue that's 
internal to Trolltech and we'll deal with it if we have to.

What I want is that people don't start modifying qt-copy. What I want is 
that, before you even touch Qt code, you get in touch with a Trolltech 
developer. The solution may be already there, or planned; or the solution 
we'd rather go with is completely different from your initial ideas; or 
we may simply reject the idea.

So, forget about the legal issues about accepting patches and concentrate 
on the technical ones. We have our own release cycle, for instance. Talk 
to a developer before you start modifying qt-copy and decide with him how 
to go about it.
