ah, one other thought: if this ends up in kde it should be possible to disable 
it globally for the desktop. implementation is simple: write the setting to 
kdeglobals instead of to the app's config; just needs to be in the UI.

otherwise if this gains traction and starts appearing in dozens of apps, 
people who don't want this feature would have to turn off dozens of times. 
ugh.
