aRts problem in 3.5

Hi,

 I know 3.5 is not that important and arts is pretty much unmaintained, 
but it seems that there is a problem in the 3.5 brach (arts 1.5 branch) 
which was not present in the version around beta2: on startup arts 
crashes by hitting an assert. As I'm far to understand what is 
happening there, I post here, maybe somebody has an idea. This looks to 
be a showstopper for me:
