With the CVS this was possible too. But it was considered a courtesy to the 
fellow KDE developers using the same CVS server not to checkout or update the 
whole repository in one single sweep, as this was putting a lot of stress on 
the server.

If svn has this performance limitation too, the svn wizards will be able to 
tell.

But I believe the best is to use a script that separately updates and compiles 
a module at a time. Look at the kdesdk/scripts/kde-build script. Very nice.
