kcmfontinst does no longer work

With current CVS trying to start 
kcmshell kcmfontinst
I only get an error dialog: The process for the fonts protocol died 
unexpectedly.

Started from konsole, I see the following:

QObject::connect: No such slot KFI::CKCmFontInst::urlEntered(const KURL&)
QObject::connect:  (sender name:   'unnamed')
QObject::connect:  (receiver name: 'kfontinst')
kio (KIOConnection): ERROR: Header read failed, errno=104
kio (KIOConnection): ERROR: Header has invalid size (-1)

This happens as root or as a normal user.

In ~/.xsession-errors I find

DCOP: register 'kcmshell-26851' -> number of clients is now 18
