Factoring out standard system information

After looking into hal-device, it seems that it could be done from fd.o.  
Although I don't have any idea on their status in regards to system info.  
The output I get displays items such as block devices, modem, sound, pnp usb 
devices and such.  Maybe it's already on their plate to implement?  Does 
anyone know more about HAL's status?
