and how are pure bugfix releases (yes, i'm sure some people want them)
called then? 3.5.1.1? that goes against anything we've established so
far.
maybe we could do 3.5a, 3.5b, etc.  we once had 3.0.5a (iirc), so it
seems relatively consistent.
