Setting up a KDE Jabber Server

Still knowing very little about jabber.. what is the advantage of hosting 
another jabber server rather than connecting to the jabber.org servers? Can 
people who registered to jabber.org then also talk to kde users and vice 
versa?

The scope of this is pretty much unclear to me.
