how do libtool convinience libraries work ?

I'd like to get this feature into cmake so that the effort to convert 
automake-based projects/modules to cmake is as small as possible.
So, this might be hardcoded into cmake as much as it is hardcoded into 
libtool.
How does libtool actually handle these convinience libs on other platforms ?
