Yes, it's used from the command line. 
But unfortunately it connects to the X server (maybe for a progress dialog?): 

# kfmclient copy file:/a file:/b
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

kfmclient: cannot connect to X server :0.0
