Compile error, details please

I've had this for days now in kdebase/kdm:
kgreeter.cpp: In method `KThemedGreeter::KThemedGreeter()':
kgreeter.cpp:748: `_theme' undeclared (first use this function)

I hear rumours that I need newer support libraries.  Can anyone shed light on 
this, and perhaps a better configure check?
