Hi,

After reading all the mails, I combine here the offered solution, which
I think should be OK for 99% of the world's population:

1. Don't offer a country/region list. Instead offer a language list and
a list with the currencies, metrological system, decimal separator,
paper size and whatever is different from country to country.

2. Use the "shortened" ISO list with the full name if there are two
names with the same short name. Don't use exception rules, as they are
a weak point.

2a. Use the local name(s) aside the ISO name, so everyone can find it's
country.

Right now I'd say 1) is the best solution, but 2) is much easier to
implement.
