Over in FreeBSD land, we have "POLA", which is honoured as much as it 
possibly can be.

POLA is the "Principle of Least Astonishment", and directly maps onto 
your last paragraph above.

If you keep changing things, you don't make them easier to use, if 
anything you make them worse to use because people have got used to the 
existing ways.

So yeah, I agree, don't change the organisation of kcontrol before 4.0.
