You can't ask people to upgrade their compiler. It needs to compile with 
2.95 at least, and perhaps also with 2.96 :-(

If that's the case it should be fixed. --enable-final is a real 
optimization for people who just run the thing. And it's a workaround for 
the only real optimization problem in gcc (cross object file 
optimizations). It's supposed to work.
